I rushed off after I read the text that came from Jack. "Oh shit, oh shit, oh shit." I said repetitively to myself. I couldn't believe what was happening, just after I thought my world was perfect again. I had shown Adam the text and he advise me to go home quickly before things get worse. As I approached my house, the wooden door was open wide; there were slight crack on the side of the door. I slowly took a step and search my house. I breathe heavily, "Jack? What's going on?"
Everything was on the floor; flower vase, picture frames, dried flowers mom put on a bowl. Shattered pieces of glasses crunched beneath my feet as I walked towards my brother's room. My eyes started to get watery, I was really worried. I pushed open Jack's bedroom door and found him bleeding on the floor. "Jack! Fuck! Jack! What happened? Oh My God, are you okay?" I ran and knelt next to him. Tears streamed down my cheeks and I lift his head and placed it on my lap, brushing his face covered in blood.
"J-J-Jade," was all he stuttered before he became unconscious.
"Jack? Jack! Stay with me, oh God, wait here I'm gonna call for help," I left my helpless brother where he was and took out my phone. I dialled 911 and called for the ambulance. I wait impatiently for the ambulance to arrive, and when it did, I shouted for them to hurry. I felt really sick when I was held Jack's hand in the ambulance. It felt like the journey was going to take forever eventhough the drive was only for ten minutes.
They rushed him in the hospital and the Doctor in charge stopped me from going in, "I'm sorry you can't come in. Who are you?"
"I'm his sister! Let me in!" I protest.
"I'm afraid you can't, we will do everything we can. Nurse, please take her to the waiting room." The doctor said as he rushed off in to check on Jack and a nurse, who looked like she was in her thirties came to fetch me. She comfort me and asked what happened. I told her that I didn't know what happened, and she was finding it hard to believe me. I explained that I was at Adam's and Jack send me a text message.
The nurse read the text: 'Jade come home quick..i dont have the enuff credz 2 call u. Some idiots broke in our house..'
"Did you call the police?" she asked nervously, handing me back the phone. I shook my head hesitantly. "Well, why's not?" she asked in a slight Alabama twang. I shrugged and out of habit, I bit my lip. She sighed and told me to take it easy and went back behind her desk. I waited impatiently and fiddled with the phone.
I scrolled down on my contacts and called Adam. I told him that I was at the hospital and he said he would come right over. I tapped my foot on the floor, when Adam marched in and shouted my name. He rushed over to me, giving me a big warm hug and whispered that everything was going to be okay.
But I know as hell that it wasn't going to be okay. All I can think about was how bad Jack's injuries were, how I was going to tell my parents. The same doctor came out in his white coat. He looked about forty, with slight grey hair and wrinkles under his eyes. "Your brother has no major injuries so he will be fine. Now, have you called your parents and told them about this?" I shook my head looking terrified.
He sighed and advise me to call my parents and tell them what happened. I knew it in my gut that Jack wouldn't want me to do that, so I knew just the right person who to call. The doctor said that Jack is still unconscious but he will wake up in a few hours. We went over to his room and his face was bruised up, his head wrapped in a bandage as a few wire attached to his hand and nose.
As countless hours went by without us noticing, Jack's fingers twitched and he mumbled something softly. Adam fell asleep on my shoulder and I woke him up when Jack was barely conscious. I took his hand gently and caress it. "Jack?"
He looked like he was in pain when he slowly opened his eyes. He mumbled something again so softly that it was barely audible. "What'd you say?" I whispered and put my ears near his mouth to hear what he was saying.
"You're okay right?" he whispered sounding scared.
"Me? You're the one who got beaten up. What happened?" I asked, demanding an answer. He smiled looking relieved and closed his eyes. "Dude," I shook his hand.
He groaned, "I'm tired."
And he went back to sleep just like that. I looked at Adam who's looking just as confused as me. The same doctor came in the room and asked us to go home. He said that Jack probably needs to stay for another two or three days just to be sure about his injuries. I agreed and Adam took me home. I asked him to stay with me until the next day and he agreed.
We cleaned the house and swept the pieces of broken glass. We bought new vase and replaced it with new flowers. It looked just the way it was. I called my parents and asked them how was everything. They said they won't be back until next week and I was relieved. I knew that if I told them about what happened, they would surely go mental and blame me, or Adam or Mandy for everything.
The next day, we went back to the hospital and as we reached Jack's room, Max and Mandy were there. Jack was eating like a pig, and wave his hand when he saw us came in the room. "Baby sis! There you are, where you've been dude?" he shouted sounding better than before.
"Uh- home?" I stated sarcastically. Jack laughed, and I took a glance at Max. He was looking sharply at me and when Mandy hugged me, he gave a fake smile.
"What is his problem with me?" I whispered into Mandy's ear and she smiled, shrugging.
"Aw, look at us all. We're all one big fucking happy family ain't we?" Jack said while munching his food. Adam held my hand when he saw the worry in my eye and I smiled assuring him that I was okay. "A'ight listen, I need to talk to ma lil baby sis so anyone else who's not it, leave for five seconds, pur-lease," he asked jokingly. Max nodded and pounded his fist and they all sauntered out of room leaving me and Jack behind.
I sat on the bed next to him and smiled, "Whats up big bro?" Suddenly, he became serious. He swallowed his food and put the knife and fork down on the plate. He took a gulp of water and looked at me intensely.
"Listen, Jade, if anything ever happens to me again, you go find Max. He's the only one who can help you okay." He said seriously.
"I don't understand the situation," I said, confused.
"You don't need to," Jack tutted and ate his food again. "Just promise me that," he begged. I nodded eventhough I wasn't really sure what was going on. He cupped my face with his hand and then slapped me, "that's my sis."
continued...
It has been a week since Jack got out of the hospital and mom and dad were back. Of course as usual, mom just had to ask me what happened and Jack gave me one of his stares so I lied. Out of the blue, she asked me to stop hanging out with Adam and Mandy because they were an influence on me. I had enough of her so I told her to stop judging them. We had a big argument over it and dad decided to get involved when mom accidently told him to fuck off.
They had a big argument and asked me to join them to talk about it. We discussed about it and I told her how wonderful people Adam and Mandy were. Of course, I had to lie a lot of things about them to my mom to make her believe me, and fortunately, she did. I told her that she wasn't always there for me and that Adam and Mandy were, I told her how she's always away and that they were always there for me. That bit was the truth at least.
She apologised to me after we had our girl-to-man-to-girl talk for two whole hours. I gotta tell you, I was quite relieved and felt happy talking to my parents. I never really talked to them for two whole hours before. For the first time, it really felt like I had a proper family.
