Reality, Fate & Destiny- Part 31

#31

The smell of gravy travelled through my nose and the hot mashed potato melt inside my mouth. I savoured every bite. Then, Jack, who was sitting opposite me, kicked my shin. Ow! I mouthed him. The knife and fork clattered on the plate and my dad looked at me. His mouth chewed slowly and his eyes were suspicious.

Dad cleared his throat, "Good steak honey," he said to break the silence between me, my mom and Jack. Mom smiled and continued eating her food. I bit my lip and chewed awkwardly. Jack raised his eyebrows at me and shrugged. I swear, there's nothing worse than having dinner with the whole family without anything to talk about.

After dinner, mom and dad decided that we, as the whole family doesn't spend enough time with each other so they wanted me and Jack to contributed in playing 'charades.' I, personally thought that it was a dumb idea but to avoid any argument, I just nodded and smiled. Jack tried to sneak out when mom was washing the dishes while dad dried them but I had pulled him.

"Okay! Who's up for some charades?" dad asked us, enthusiastically.

Mom clapped her hands, "I am! I am!" and spoke in a baby-ish tone. They both clapped their hands and twirled around. Wow, I thought.

"Mom, dad, we're not kids anymore y'know. I'm going to be nineteen this year," Jack said sheepishly and slouched down the couch. I folded my arms against my chest and sat next to Jack. "Let's do something else, like, how about we just talk?" my brother suggested. Well, it was better than playing charades I thought.

"Yes! Let's um, let's talk. I mean, we-we haven't done that in a while," I stuttered trying to find the right words to say.

"Okay. We'll talk. So, Jada, what did you guys do when we weren't here?" mom asked.

"Mom, why do you keep calling me Jada? It's Jade. I mean, everyone else calls me that."

"Since when did I become everyone else?" mom said, her voice almost inaudible.

I sighed, "I didn't mean it that way. Anyway, we just-"

"We just invited a couple of people to come over to stay with. I invited Max and Jade invited Adam and Mandy. That's what we did when you guys weren't here," Jack rudely interrupted me. I looked at him, thinking that I could've come up with a better lie.

"Adam and Mandy?" suddenly she became more interested, "they slept over at our house?"

I nodded hesitantly and bit my lip. I knew that she was going to ask me more questions, so I was ready to come up with more lies. She raised her eyebrows and took my dad's hand and they both went upstairs. This was weird I thought. "Goodnight kids, love you both," her voice faded as they went up to their room. Me and Jack looked at each other, confused. I clicked on the remote TV and put my leg on the coffee table.
